Cargo handling solutions and services firm Kalmar is to hold a two-day idea-creation challenge during this year’s TOC Europe event which aims to discover disruptive ideas for specific customer issues in the container handling sector.

Kalmar Co-Create, which will take place on June 12 and 13 in Rotterdam in the Netherlands, will see three Finnish companies from Kalmar’s partner network — Futurice, Gofore and Cybercom — “work on specific customer pains”.

The challenge aims to uncover the disruptive ideas through co-creation with solution providers, terminal operators and development partners.

Each of the companies — which are digital services development experts — will be supported by a Kalmar mentor during the challenge, who will help the teams undertake customer interviews and guide the groups.

According to Lasse Eriksson, Kalmar’s vice president for new service business concepts, those at Kalmar — part of Finnish company Cargotec — want to shape the industry through promoting openness and working together.

“TOC Europe provides us with a great opportunity to bridge together our customers, best-in-class service designers and solution developers with Kalmar’s competence and experience in order to look for new solutions to serve the needs of our customers,” he said.

“By bringing together experts with different backgrounds, we expect to co-create novel concept proposals that have potential to shape our industry.”

Mr Eriksson later added: “Our partners have deep knowledge of service design, digital technologies and concept creation, and combining that with Kalmar’s expertise in container handling during the most significant annual event of the industry gives us a unique setup for co-creation and exploration of new solutions.”

Those who would like to follow the challenge on Kalmar’s Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn accounts can use the hashtag #CoCreate.
